Being a teacher means being a leader in some way, shape, or form. Everyday, we lead our students through discussions and activities to help them build mastery of our content. However, we are called upon to be more than educational leaders; we need to make sure that we do our best to lead our students morally, too. Teachers are responsible for the generations to come. If we can't act as leaders and role models for our students, we do them a disservice.
I try to be a leader in my school by involving myself in extracurricular activities and supporting student interests. This allows me to be a leader in ways outside my classroom. Leading student groups opens the doors for me to interact with students that I may not see in my class; as such, I'm introduced to a lot of kids that I wouldn't know otherwise. Additionally, coaching puts me in a specific leadership position in which student athletes look up to me for multiple reasons; I'm responsible for teaching them good sportsmanship, athletic skill, communication with their teammates, etc.
The contents in this page explore my involvement in extracurricular activities and my certification in Sports Leadership and Coaching. While many of these roles are nonacademic, I can apply what I learn and do to how I interact with my students in class.
